“If I were to disappear right this very moment,” the girl said tearfully, “no one on this dreadful planet would miss me after a few years.”
“I would, and dreadfully so. Oftentimes, it’s only after one loses something that they realize its true value,” he mused. “But you and I both know that I am nothing like that. I see the value in everything, and I know that your value is too great to be wasted. If I were to lose you, I would be the most wretched creature alive.”
The girl laughed derisively at that. “Ah, but you can’t be the ‘most wretched creature alive’, not while I’m around.”
A faint smile. “Some might say that you are being a bit too dramatic, dear.”
She fell silent, then, for she didn't have the heart to argue with him further.
